In this latest offering in the Pirates series, Johnny Depp once again charms us with his goofy portrayal. The story as always is improbable, but adventure, comedy and bizarre characters are all par for the course. Even if you are not a fan of this series, watch it just for the entertainment value, since swashbuckling pirates, marauding villains and beautiful women like Penelope Cruz all combine together to give you an evening of sheer joy.
The story line is softer to some extent, and we miss Orlando Bloom and the lovely Keira Knightley, but Johnny Depp just seems to carry the entire film on his whacky shoulders.

Kung Fu Panda 2 is one of those animated films which has gone much beyond the classification of being a child’s film. It has everything that a great entertainer needs and is one of Dreamworks best presentations.

It has a funny and charming storyline – A panda who needs to defend his valley from an albino peacock – how much more bizarre can you get. Yet you connect with the characters and the story and you are cheering him and his four friends as they embark on their mission.
This is a great sequel to the first Kung Fu Panda film, and technical excellence and great dialogues make it a joy to watch.

Inglorious Basterds – 2009

One of Quentin Tarantino’s finest films, this Brad Pitt and Christopher Waltz starrer is a fictional account of two plots to eliminate the Nazi leadership. Thoroughly entertaining, yet violent and vile in many places, it does not glorify either the plotters not does it decry the German soldiers.

The story may be fictional, but Tarantino’s superb direction and his ability to make even a simple film look and sound great, make this seem like a true story.

Sherlock Holmes – 2009

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law have lifted this oft repeated story beyond the realms of the ordinary. Sherlock Holmes is a familiar character, yet Downey’s portrayal is one of an intense brooding, egoistic yet brilliant human being. His unethical behaviour while breaking up his friend Watson’s engagement, his love for the unscrupulous Irene Adler are all hitherto unforeseen facets of his character.

The story is well-known, yet it’s adaptation is unique and distinctive, thus making it the best movie about the most famous detective in the world.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – 2001:

It is not easy to choose the best Harry Potter film, but the Philosopher’s Stone was the first among the series, and here once again was a picturisation of a good book into an even better film. The book series captured the imagination of young and old readers, and a lot was expected from David Heyman’s productions.

Daniel Radcliffe as the bespectacled Harry and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger are among the best performances in the film, and J K Rowlings story of wizards and goblins and ‘he who shall not be named’ make for an engrossing all-time classic.

The Lord of the Rings – Return of the King – 2001:
It was only a matter of time before J.R.R.Tolkein’s superb trilogy was converted into films. The books transported you into a land where there was a different language and a different set of fantasy people who lived by their own rules and ethics. Peter Jackson has done a superb job of retaining the ambience of the book, and yet sending us into a fantasy world which he made seem realistic and credible. All three films in the series are compelling stories and as you wander through the regions of the “middle earth” you traverse a world of Hobbits and Wizards and swords and precious rings, you realize you are watching one of the best fantasy films ever made.

Meryl Streep has the ability to make even a mediocre film shine with the luminosity of her acting. However, this is one of her better movies, where she essays the role of Julia Child, the well-known cook-book writer. This story is juxtaposed on the story of Julie Powell, a blog writer who has vowed to cook all of Julia Child’s recipes within a year. A rather improbable story which traverses across two different eras, yet we are fascinated by the story of these two women, bound by the common thread of a love for good food.

Bridget Jones Diary – 2001

A romantic comedy based on the book of the same name by Helen Fielding, this is the story of a young, slightly over-weight young woman (Renee Zellweger at her best) trying to look for her “true love” in this helter-skelter world. Hugh Grant, as the eternally charming yet caddish boss and Colin Firth, as her hapless and reluctant suitor, are her two beaus. She writes a diary about her daily battle with diets and about her on and off love life. You smile as you watch her make a mess of her relationships and as she attempts to repair them and bring her life back on track again.

A Single Man – 2009

“To feel, rather than think” are Colin Firth’s closing lines in this powerful film about a middle-aged professor trying to come to terms with his grief after the death of his gay partner in an accident. The undercurrents of sorrow, while he continues with his daily life and contemplates suicide, his interactions with his friend Charley, played superbly by Julianne Moore, and his interface with his student Kenny are all a part of the drama unfolding before you. The “stiff British upper lip” is very much in evidence here, as he tries to go on with his daily life, without succumbing to his overall sadness and distress.

Katherine Bigelow became the first woman to win the Best Director’s Oscar with this film about a bomb disposal three man team in Iraq. She has captured the tension and the stress of a war-zone with tremendous skill, and has given us superb performances from stars such as Jeremy Renner and Anthony MacKie. Three guys with the most dangerous job in the world, try to come to terms with their own inner conflicts, while they learn the meaning of courage and fortitude. This is the best war film, so far, about the conflict in Iraq.
